Many writers feel that the first draft is only that – a draft. The finished product comes after painful and, sometimes, frustrating editing that seems to never end. But if “the devil is in the details,” such is the case with editing. The details matter.
TYPES OF EDITING
Substantive (developmental) editing: This is the most intensive and comprehensive form of editing. The document is evaluated as a whole and problems of structure, organization, coherence, and logical consistency are corrected. Sentences may be removed or added. Paragraphs may be rewritten, condensed, or expanded. Blocks of text may be moved from one section to another. We combine proofreading with this level of editing so that while we improve the overall quality of the document, we correct all errors as well. Substantive editing includes one revision at no additional charge. Turnaround time must be negotiated.
Copy editing: The editor corrects grammar, style, repetition, word usage, and jargon. Copy editing includes one revision at no additional charge. Turnaround time is generally three business days. There is some overlap of proofreading and copy editing.
Proofreading: This is the lightest form of editing. Minor errors are corrected. Minor errors include errors of grammar and style; errors of capitalization, punctuation, spelling and word usage (e.g., to/two/too; affect/effect; their, there, they’re)
Line Editing: Line editing refers to prose. It’s about the very craft of writing. This would include analyzing and repairing paragraph structure, sentence flow, word choice, and language-related techniques. This level of editing includes correcting voice, style, readability, and forward movement.
Translation Editing: We do not offer “translation” services from one language to another. Rather, we edit documents you have already translated into English.
Many writers, for whom English is not their native language, translate text to English and do a fairly credible job. But there are often formatting and usage problems that are very noticeable to the native English-speaking person viewing your website.
We can help fine tune the English-language version of your web pages (or other business documents) so your text does not have any structural problems that jump out at readers who have a fuller command of the English language.
